Haft Gumbaz
Kalburgi (Gulbarga) District, Karnataka
The Haft Gumbaz meaning “Seven
Domes” is a mausoleum of the Bahamani royal family, located on the outskirts of
Kalburgi (Gulbarga) District.
Four of the Haft Gumbaz tombs are
identifiable as those of Mujahid Shah Bahamani, Daud Shah bahamani, Shams al
din and Ghyas as din Bahamani, and Firuz Shah Bahamni.
The earlier tomb show predominant
Tughluqi influences, while the latest and most elaborate tomb, that of Firuz
Shah, shows traces typical of what became the Bahamni style of architecture,
the first Islamic style of the Deccan that deviated completely form Tughluqi
precedents.
Tomb
of the Mujahid Shah
This tomb, at the western end of
the complex, is that of the 3rd Bahamani Sultan, Mujahid Shah (1375 –
1378 AD). It has sloping walls that are devoid of any decoration. The dome is
flattish and the corners are adorned with fluted finials. There are 3 arched
entrances on the east and the south sides of structure. The sarcophagi within
are those of the king, his wife and his siter.
